September 2008 - UPDATE
Just after school ended last June we had a great meeting with Dr. Galo and agreed that we would continue to work together on our community initiatives.
Dr. Galo sent us a follow-up letter in which she committed to do the following:
1) I will discuss with the principals the possibility of designating a School Council liaison to facilitate two-way communication that connects school and community efforts around climate and culture. As I told you when we met, our School Councils do typically have a climate-related goal as part of their annual improvement plans.
2) I will propose a goal of supporting your community effort as part of the annual (School Committee/Superintendent) goal setting process.
3) I will review our School Committee Policy Handbook and School Handbooks to highlight all of the language that relates to fostering a respectful school climate, freedom from harassment or bullying, etc. I will forward a copy of such existing language excerpts to you and I will review it with the Policy Subcommittee to determine if additional language may be appropriate.
4) I will write a fall Education Matters column (Journal) on the topic of school and community working together on this important matter. We might coordinate this with your fall meeting.
For our part we have decided to forgo a general meeting and rather focus on an initial gathering with leaders from the town youth sports organizations, religious leadership, scout leadership, and other community leaders to work on developing cohesive plan that will involve the entire community in discussing initiatives to foster good citizenship.
In addition, we have been approached by the South Shore Hospital Youth Health Connection to become a member of their Parent Advisory Group.
All of us in the community need to continue to set good examples by our actions and words to provide positive guidance to our children.
